Climate and Storm History of Palm Bay, Florida


Palm Bay, Florida has a mild sunny climate and a defined rainy season during the month of June until September. These months are prone to tropical cyclones. Palm Bay, Florida is common to tornadoes among the states. Per year the cause of death is thunderstorms and lightning. Dry season usually occurs during October and May that keeps the state and through the peninsula. The average high temperature during this time is 30 to 32C and lower to 21 to 24C. There are occasional thunderstorms during the afternoon and sea breezes the cools the throughout the day. Bushfire is common during this dry season. Due to the existing El Nino, rainfall increases during winter that makes the temperature cooler. Snow occurs in early November and late April. These months are usually warm and dry. The average high temperature is 24 to 27C and lows to 14 to 19C. Cold fronts are experienced in the city with the temperature of 10 to 20C and lows to 5 to 15C that only lasts for days.

The average temperature in Palm Bay is 18 to 21C in the north part while 21 to 25C in the south part. In Key West, the highest temperature recorded at 25.7C. You could find many inland lakes and ponds in the state. This helps in making abundant rainfall and high humidity. But precipitation changes yearly and drought occurs that cause problems in Palm Bay. The other parts of southern Florida and Palm Beach have a tropical climate that reaches the temperature of 18.0C. Throughout May and October, the annual precipitation is 1,500mm. There are an average of 133 wet days and 234 sunny days annually. On the months of June 1 until November 30 comes hurricane season and peaks until August to October. Hurricane hits the city during 1928, 1974, 1949, 1964, 1965, 1979, 1992, 1999, 2004 and 2005. Winds are usually comes from the east and southeast in the southern peninsula, winds blew coming in the north during winter and in the south during summer. Wind velocities reach 12.7km/hr at Jacksonville and 14. 8km/hr at Miami. Due to its long coastline, it makes Florida prone to hurricanes and tropical storms that have a wind speed of 240km/hr that comes from Atlantic or Gulf coast. September 9-10, 1960 and 1992 was considered the most destructive in the history of Florida. The damaged of the hurricane caused an estimate of $300 million damages. Hurricane Andrew during August 23 to 24 1992 brought massive destruction to the city and estimated of 10 billion worth of damages. Hurricanes are not just common in Florida there are others like tornadoes and water sprouts.

1928-San Felipe Okeechobee Hurricane- Is known to be the second deadliest hurricane that hit Palm Beach on the day of September 16, 1928. It caused a surge of 6 to 9 feet of water that covered the whole area. It caused of about 1,836 deaths in the area alone.

1935- Florida Keys Labor Day Hurricane- it was categorize as Category 5 when it hit the United States. It has the most intense hurricane to hit the United States with wind pressure of 26.35 inches. The hurricane caused a huge damaged that estimated at $6 million.
